Tom Tikka’s Roomful of Strangers is a 10-track album that moves with the confidence of an artist who knows exactly how to balance classic rock craft, pop-rock immediacy, and a more heartfelt singer-songwriter core. Produced by Janne Saksa, the record also reconnects Tikka with former Carmen Gray bandmates Lappe Holopainen, Pete Sirkiä, and Nicklas Nyman, alongside drummer Rale Tiiainen, giving the album a strong sense of shared history without making it feel stuck in the past.
“Wrecking Ball,” sung by Nicklas Nyman, opens the album with a lot of energy, setting the tone through classic rock riffs, a driving rhythm, and a spectacular guitar solo from Lappe Holopainen. It feels like the right kind of opener, bold and immediate, with enough movement to introduce the record’s more powerful side straight away. From there, “It Was Always You” shifts into a more pop-rock direction, with Tikka’s voice bringing a slightly lower, blues-leaning colour in places and a catchy chorus supported by overdriven guitars. Tikka himself plays the lead guitar here, adding an alternative rock edge that gives the track extra bite.
“Denim Never Looked So Good” changes the atmosphere with a piano-led ballad feel, built around a strong and emotional vocal performance that gradually opens as the song evolves. “The Day I Found You,” another track featuring Tikka on lead guitar, feels brighter and more joyful, helped by a groovy rhythmic shake in the drum section and a sunny melodic lift that gives the album one of its most uplifting moments.
Across the middle of the record, Roomful of Strangers keeps returning to blues-rock strength, heartfelt vocal performances, and well-handled production, with distorted guitars and powerful drums giving the songs a consistent backbone. “I’m Not Your Man” brings in a more acoustic Americana flavour, with Rale Tiiainen on drums, Pete Sirkiä on bass, and Mikko Lindeman on piano, creating something heartfelt but still edged rather than overly soft.
The album closes with “Sacrificing Sins,” featuring Rale Tiiainen on drums and Pete Sirkiä on bass, and it lands with a more hard-rock and anthemic weight. It is not the fastest track here, but it feels built for a live crowd, especially through the strength of the vocal performance and those powerful high notes. Roomful of Strangers is a well-produced, energetic, and emotionally rich rock album, full of strong performances, sharp guitars, and songs that feel ready to live beyond the studio.
