With his new single Amulet, The7thGatekeeper steps away from his metal background to embrace a lo-fi garage rock sound full of warmth, grit, and reflective energy. Hailing from Barry, South Wales, the artist behind the moniker Giles Sommerwill writes, arranges, performs, records, and mixes his own work. The result is a track that feels direct and deeply personal, rooted in both memory and creative instinct.
Amulet was inspired by a Thomas Morris short story and taps into a youthful sense of wonder, channeling a mood that blends simplicity with emotional resonance. There is a palpable feeling of spontaneity in the recording. You can almost hear the walls of his home “chaos room” as they absorb the fuzzed-out guitar tones and vocal layers. Sommerwill doesn’t over-polish, and the song is better for it. His love for artists like Queens of the Stone Age and Jack White is easy to spot, but the track also carries its own voice, rough-edged and melodic, nostalgic yet restless.
Mastered by Romesh Dodangoda at Longwave Studios, Amulet feels compact and lived-in. The track doesn’t try to reinvent the genre but instead breathes life into its rawest form. The intention is clear: capture the spark of inspiration in the moment, without sanding down the edges.
