SoundFarm Make Vintage Funk-Rock Feel Fresh on “Suck It Up”
SoundFarm’s “Suck It Up” is the kind of track that works because it does not try to fit neatly into one lane. The Oslo-based collective bring together funk, rock, bluesy grit, soul, and a slightly vintage studio feel, but the result never sounds confused. It feels like a band following the groove first, then letting the rest of the song grow naturally around it.
Marte B. Trolldalen’s voice gives the track a very strong centre. Her delivery is soulful and smooth, almost seductive in tone, and that creates a great contrast with the fuzzy guitar riff underneath. The guitar has a blues-rock weight, but also a more modern edge, sometimes moving close to stoner rock territory. In certain moments, the sound sits somewhere between the dirtier side of Queens of the Stone Age and the more dramatic rock tension of Muse, but filtered through a warmer, more vintage production style.
That production makes a big difference. The drums have a real old-school feel, and knowing the band recorded much of the performance live without click tracks or samples makes sense when listening to it. The rhythm breathes. It is groovy, slightly loose in the right places, and full of character. The bass and drums keep the track moving with a strong physical pulse, while the guitar gives it bite.
The brass parts add another layer, bringing funk colour into the song and giving the arrangement a more playful lift. Then, closer to the end, the track opens into a section that feels more jazz and soul-influenced, adding even more personality without breaking the flow. That shift makes “Suck It Up” feel less predictable and more alive.
This is a very charming and energetic release from SoundFarm. It has fuzz, groove, vintage warmth, soul, and enough strange little details to make it stand out. You do not hear many songs built like this, and that is exactly what makes it so enjoyable.
