Musica Sierra – “Garden”
Garden, from Musica Sierra, unveils a beautifully crafted album that invites families into the rhythms of the earth. This fifth installment of the Musical Headwaters series offers more than music, it plants the seeds of environmental awareness and emotional connection, using song as a way to nurture empathy and curiosity in children.
Led by Grammy-nominated tenor Owen McIntosh and produced by Juilliard-trained oboist Lindsay McIntosh, Garden is the result of deep collaboration between two acclaimed ensembles: Fire & Grace and The Nightbirds. Together, they bring Owen’s childhood memories and connection to the land to life through vibrant string arrangements, glowing harmonies, and playful lyrics. Each track mirrors a season in the life of a garden, from the budding promise of spring in “Grow” to the whimsical chase of “Fly the Coop,” where chickens disrupt a peaceful plot. “Sunflower Sky” encourages diversity and kindness, and the album closes with “Harvest,” a dance-worthy instrumental celebration that brings the journey full circle.
The songwriting is gently educational without being didactic. McIntosh refined each tune with his K–12 students in Loyalton, California, ensuring they were engaging and singable. The result is a set of songs that easily integrate into classrooms or cozy afternoons at home.
