Lucija Grabovac steps into her solo career with SMILE, a debut album that feels deeply rooted in emotion, nature, and classic songwriter traditions. Across fourteen tracks, the Croatian artist blends folk, Americana, pop rock and softer country influences into a record that constantly shifts moods while still feeling cohesive from beginning to end.
The production from Croatian producer Renato Babić keeps everything warm and organic, allowing the instruments to breathe naturally inside the mix. Acoustic guitars sit at the center of many songs, while electric guitar parts bring texture and emotional lift without overpowering the intimate songwriting. Certain moments lean further into reflective folk territory, while others open up into more energetic pop folk arrangements with fuller drums and brighter choruses, giving the album a constant sense of movement.
Lucija’s vocals become the thread connecting all these different shades together. Her voice carries a softness that fits the quieter ballads beautifully, but she also knows how to push melodies into more powerful and uplifting territory when the arrangements expand. You can hear traces of 90s influences throughout the album, especially in some of the dreamy guitar tones and emotional phrasing that occasionally recall bands like The Cranberries, while the Americana songwriting approach and grounded storytelling bring to mind artists such as Brandi Carlile.
Nature imagery plays a huge role in shaping the atmosphere of SMILE. The sea, forests, silence, sunsets and open spaces of Dalmatia feel present throughout the record, not only lyrically but also inside the pacing and arrangements themselves. Many tracks carry a calm, spacious feeling that mirrors those landscapes, giving the album a very immersive character.
