Harsh Language Push Further Into the Dark on “Helium Heart”
We already caught a glimpse of Harsh Language’s sonic identity with To Nothing, a track that introduced their ability to merge weight and atmosphere without losing melodic focus. “Helium Heart” builds on that foundation but stretches it in a more intense direction, both emotionally and sonically, showing a band that’s clearly not interested in staying still.
The track leans into a darker palette from the start, with a melancholic synth arpeggio that then introduces some heavy beatdown guitar riffs. Industrial touches come through in the sound design, echoing that cold, mechanical edge associated with Nine Inch Nails, while the rhythmic shifts in the heavier sections bring to mind the off-kilter precision of TOOL. None of it feels derivative though, because the band keeps everything anchored in their own style, where electronics and rock don’t compete but constantly feed into each other.
Vocals carry a strong emotional charge, delivering some typical melancholic vibes reminiscent of some of the more psychedelic moments of bands like Failure, which fits perfectly with the theme of loss running through the track. Harmonies soften certain passages just enough to contrast the heavier instrumentation, adding that sense of lift without ever turning the song into something lighter than it should be.
The guitars drive the track with thick, riff-heavy sections that break into tighter, more intricate patterns, while the drums lock in with precision, and the mix leaves enough space for the synths to cut through without everything clashing.
“Helium Heart” ends up feeling both expansive and focused at the same time, pushing into heavier and more experimental territory while still holding onto the melodic instincts that make the band so accessible. It’s the kind of track that confirms Harsh Language are actively testing how far they can take it without losing what makes them work in the first place, and it sounds amazing.
