Flat Moon’s debut album Cookin’ Up a Groove is the kind of record that reminds you music can still surprise you. Some songs embrace pure dance energy, others lean into progressive buildups, others still drift into psychedelic abstractions, yet the band’s identity remains unmistakable. It is groovy, theatrical and proudly eccentric from the first note to the last.
The album taps into themes of overstimulation, social anxiety, insomnia, manipulation, self-belief and emotional release, reflecting neurodivergent experiences through a lens that feels both personal and universal. What stands out most is that every track radiates enjoyment. You can hear how much fun they had making this, and that energy is infectious. Cookin’ Up a Groove is easily one of the most impressive albums we’ve heard this year, a record built for deep listening, dancing, daydreaming and discovering new layers each time you press play. It is impossible to sit still and even harder to forget.
